In March 2021, we provided 100 trees to St James Primary School in Pen-Y-Cae, Caerphilly, Wales. When they applied to join the Tree Nursery programme, Mrs. Beth Hilbourne, a teacher and ECO council leader at the school, wrote:
“We would love to develop our large grounds and teach our children the importance of planting trees and looking after the planet. We want to teach our children the importance of sustainability and to provide them with a thirst for learning. We also feel it is important to educate the future generation about wildlife and the positive impact the environment can have on life and well-being. Fostering a love of the outdoors is at the heart of education.”
After providing the exciting news that they were to join our School Tree Nursery programme, the trees were delivered a few months later, and they spent a full day planting the trees. More than 350 school children aged 0-11 alongside 13 teachers took part on this great day of planting!
After the event, Beth provided the following feedback:
“The trees from the ERS were a welcomed project for the entire school. They arrived when children were coming back into the classroom after a long period of time of home-schooling, and it really did help to lift morale and provide joy.
Every child became a valued part of it all and every child helped to plant / organise the entire process. Lessons were planned, linked to the trees, and children mapped out the grounds and areas for planting. Brilliant!
The delivery details were spot-on and the trees arrived in perfect condition. The instructions for planting were clear and the stakes and protectors were great. The children have learnt so much and we are forever grateful for the trees that will enhance our grounds and support our wildlife for many years.”
