Ecosystem: Woodland
Species: Upland oakwood

Upland oakwood is a priority habitat of the local and national Habitat Action Plans. There is little living tradition of sustainable woodland management in our area, but new interest is emerging.

Description: Only 4% of our area is covered in woodland. The process of decline has been going on for centuries. Reasons for this decline are high population density, grazing pressure and the infavourable climate for easy woodland regeneration.

We have a 25-year programme of planting 5 ha per year, with the help of the local community. We offer people to take on responsibility for their personal Carbondioxide emmissions by planting enough trees each year to soak up an equal or greater amount of CO2. We also team up with other local groups to restore degraded ancient woodland. Another important function of woodland in our area is the prevention of flooding. Therefore we focus our reforestation efforts on steep valley slopes in the watershed area of our local river, the Calder.

Valued Skills:

Workdays are Mondays (tree nursery) and Wednesdays (planting sites). Annual plantings in early October, on New Year’s Day & on our group’s birthday early March; group plantings which you can organise with us.

Achievements:

So far, we have planted 12 ha of broadleaved woodland. We now also have a community tree nursery, where we are growing on our own stock from local seed, partly gathered by our volunteers.

Goals: Restoration of the woodland resource in our valley; sustainable livelihoods from keeping the woods alive.
