Earth Restoration Project

Support a School

School Tree Nurseries Appeal, UK

Thus far:

With your help ERS has educated many children about the environment and they have planted thousands of trees throughout the UK and around the world.

For 2008, please help us to bring a tree nursery to 100 schools -enabling children to plant trees whilst learning and restoring their local environment.

School Tree Nurseries:

The School Tree Nursery programme aims to bring together environmental education and practical ecological restoration work in schools around the UK and worldwide.

How it works:

Each school receives support to create a tree nursery in their school grounds and are also given proper guidance on how to maintain the nursery by our ERS Representatives.  Once the saplings have reached a certain maturity, then, together with the children, ERS representatives in the school plant out the young on suitable land, following an agreement with the local government and landowners.

Land most suitable for the trees will be barren areas prone to erosion, flood plains, degraded inner city areas, in gullies, next to streams and more.  During outplanting day, children will receive an educational workshop using theatre or games to encourage their imagination.  They will also receive a clear understanding of the importance of trees in the global ecosystem and how they can help better their local environment through tree planting.

ERS Representatives:

ERS representatives are from all walks of life, they are selected by their passion for the environment and their knowledge of the local ecology.  Most of them will have a direct connection to the school.

Cost per nursery:

The costs of trees, materials, transport for each school, is calculated approx at 500 GBP per school.

Summary:

Per school per year

The breakdown follows: (GBP)

  • Provision of saplings for planting 100 (approx. 50 native trees)
  • Plant care and materials                              75
  • Personnel and ERS administrative overhead 100
  • Transport student day costs                         75
  • Education, i.e posters, photos etc                 75
  • Miscellaneous and provisional                      75
    Total                                                         500
Depending on the capacity of the school, it is an objective for ERS to have the tree nurseries productive every year and that more trees are added to the nursery.

Selection of local sites in the community for the tree planting:

ERS will, with the advice of local rangers, try and establish the best practice for each local wildlife area or bio region.  Only native trees will be used for this initiative as much as possible.  The local sites will be chosen according to ecological principles and we will try and mimick the natural landscape wherever possible.

School enrolled: South Malling Primary, Lewes, East Sussex.

The following feedback from Euan Crockett, aged 9:

"What can you think of that involves 27 children, some spades, soggy soil, a woods man and some baby trees? On Friday November 17th, the year 5 class from South Malling Primary School in Lewes went on to their school field to plant some special trees.Paul, from the Earth Restoration Service, brought some small hazel, ash and oak trees for us to plant on the edge of the school field. He dug some holes for us and we dug some others.  We held the trees in the holes while he put the soil in around the tree roots. When they are big enough the trees will be planted somewhere else where they are needed.  We’re looking after them whilst they grow and until they are ready to be planted in the wild. The reason it’s important to plant trees is because trees provide oxygen – we need them to breathe and to live.  Also, when we cut trees down, we are destroying animal’s habitats. Planting trees is important for humans, animals, birds and insects to live happily and healthily. It was so great to feel as though I am helping the world by planting the trees. "

Please support our initiative and get our children involved!
