ERS Tree Nursery, Malawi, Africa

The problem: Every 10 minutes in Malawi, one of the poorest nations of Africa, an area of forest the size of a football pitch is being cut down

Wood is a necessary part of everyday life, and also there is tremendous pressure to clear forests for agriculture. The present way of life is not sustainable.Wood has always been treated as a free resource and vast areas of woodland have been cleared carelessly without any replanting for future generations. This deforestation also leads to soil erosion, land degradation and ultimately climate change which is and will have a devastating effect.

Summary

The aim of ERS Tree Nursery Programme in Malawi is to grow 4 million trees per year in order to provide a sustainable source of wood for the future, as well as train and empower local communities to sustainably manage their environment and thus reduce poverty.  The programme envisages the creation of 400 community tree nurseries, each growing 10 thousand trees per year.

Project Goal

The overall goal of this project is to preserve the limited existing tree cover, and to replace a significant part of the indigenous woodland that has previously been felled in the Nkhata Bay District, Malawi.

The goal will be achieved by planting a very large numbers of trees that will provide sufficient wood for future human activities, such as cooking and brick burning.  The project will only work with the help and co-operation of the Chiefs and their local communities.  To this end, an ongoing training and education programme will be maintained to promote sustainable use of the natural resources for the future.

The ERS Tree Programme in Malawi will particularly benefit women in the Nkhata Bay District through education and training – they will learn how to establish and operate tree nurseries, how to produce and use mbaula (a fuel efficient wood burner cooker) production.  They will also benefit from an abundant supply of sustainably produced, locally sourced, wood.  In addition, agriculture in the area will benefit from the usage of agro-forestry trees which will help improve soil fertility.

Project location

An area of approximately 4000 km2 in the Nkhata Bay District, Malawi

Total Budget:

£400’000 per year – 2 000’000 over 5 years (total budget breakdown available)

1£ pays for 10 trees
10 £ pays for 100 trees
100 £ pays for 1000 trees (1000 trees replants an area the size of a football pitch)
1000 £ pays for 10000 trees

This money pays for equipment, polythene tubes, seeds, training, monitoring and transport.  The nursery staff will be paid for each sucessfully planted tree seedling.

Project Beneficiaries

The project beneficiaries will be all members of the community, including Traditional Authorities, Chiefs, men, women, and young people in the district, through both the planting and harvesting of trees, training and through environmental education programmes.  With the local people managing their environment, this project will significantly contribute towards reducing poverty.

Programme Activities

Each Tree Nursery has its own unique features, but generally the programme involves:

- Meet all Traditional Authorities, Chiefs, and Forest Guards in the target area
- Awareness training, tree nursery training, compost training, etc
- Supply of basic tree nursery equipment, polythene tubes and seeds
- Establishment of tree nurseries
- Setting up a mbaula (fuel efficient wood burning cooker) projects in various areas
- Monitoring of tree nurseries and localised training
- Helping to plan planting out programme
- Planting out
- Training and caring for the newly planted out seedlings

Monitoring and evaluation

All activities shall be monitored and evaluated by our programme partner Ripple Africa, the forest guards, local communities and all other stakeholders.

Conclusion

This project is designed to produce maximum results.  Almost all the money raised under this programme will be used in the field for equipment and seed, training and monitoring.  Administrative costs are minimal.

Managers of the project will be chosen on the basis of ability and real passion for improving the environment in Malawi.  We are confident that the project will have major and longlasting benefits for the rural area of Nkhata Bay District, and that it will make a major contribution to poverty reduction.
